Fenofibrate is used along with a proper diet to help lower "bad" cholesterol and fats (such as LDL, triglycerides) and raise "good" cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. ... Lowering triglycerides in people with very high triglyceride blood levels may decrease the risk of pancreas disease (pancreatitis).
Fenofibrate, marketed as Tricor and under several other brand names, is a drug of the fibrate class. It is mainly used to reduce cholesterol levels in people at risk of cardiovascular disease. Like other fibrates, it reduces both low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) levels, as well as increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels and reducing triglyceride levels.[1] It is used alone or along with statins in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia. However, due to lack of cardiovascular benefit in several large trials and the risk of side effects such as muscle damage, the FDA withdrew approval for the use in high cholesterol treatment in combination with statins.
