This medication is used to treat sudden diarrhea (including traveler's diarrhea). It works by slowing down the movement of the gut. This decreases the number of bowel movements and makes the stool less watery. Loperamide is also used to reduce the amount of discharge in patients who have had an ileostomy.
Loperamide, sold under the brand name Imodium, among others,[1] is a medication used to decrease the frequency of diarrhea.[2] It is often used for this purpose in gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and short bowel syndrome.[2] It is not recommended for those with blood in the stool.[2] The medication is taken by mouth.[2]
